Accessible Information

The Pollen Shop has recently completed an accessible information consultancy for the Healthcare Commission. The project looked at how the Commission produces accessible information for a variety of professional and public audiences. The outcome of the project was strategy to reach out to people who require information in alternative formats or languages other than English.

This work as built upon similar projects which have developed for public authorities in the field of accessible information. Other clients have included the Commission for Social Care Inspection, the Welsh Assembly Government, Department for Constitutional Affairs and the Disability Rights Commission

Increasingly public authorities have to think more carefully about how they reach out to people. The Disability Discrimination Act 2005 placed a duty on public authorities to set out how they plan to end the discrimination that disabled people encounter through the creation of a Disability Equality Scheme.

Most public authorities will have included issues around accessible information in their Disability Equality Scheme. Working out strategies to implement these policies in a logical and cost efficient way can be difficult. This is because there are a number of potentially conflicting interests which need to be managed within an overall framework of protecting the rights of people covered by the Disability Discrimination Act.

The Pollen Shop has created a number of tools which can help public authorities meet their duties in this area. We also provide consultancy and training in creating and maintaining efficient accessible communication systems
